In recognizing an emergency, it’s important to develop a general impression on what has occurred.

The most critical decision you will make is whether to get involved or not.

Emergencies are often unsafe due to electrical, water, traffic, chemical and fire hazards. It’s also important to be careful regarding disease transmission.

One of the main jobs for a first aid responder is to activate the EMS system.

Sudden cardiac arrest can occur without warning to anyone, at anytime.

By itself, CPR is only a temporary measure that can buy time until more advanced care can be provided.

If the heart stops, it is possible to restore at least some blood flow through the circulatory system by way of external chest compressions.

Rescue breaths are artificial breaths given to someone who is not breathing.

Primary Assessment helps you assess for immediate life-threatening problems.

Defibrillation – Learning to operate AED’s by turning it on, adhering the pads, allowing the AED to analyze a heart rhythm and safely deliver a shock if directed by the AED.

Foreign Body Airway Obstruction. You must be able to recognize the difference between a mild block and a severe block.

Young children are particularly at risk for choking because of the size of their air passages.

Primary assessment in the responsive person in order to assess and immediately treat life-threatening problems, including bleeding and shock.

Learning the secondary on and ongoing assessments in order to gather additional and ongoing information.

Control of bleeding, external and internal bleeding, and managing shock.

Controlling the results of an amputation and impaled objects as well as open chest injuries and open abdominal injuries.

Handling muscle and bone injuries is critical and includes the head, neck and back as well as handling brain injuries and swollen, painful and deformed limbs.

Spinal motion restriction is covered as well as facial injuries including objects and chemicals in the eye.

Nosebleeds, injured teeth, minor and major as well as electrical and chemical burns are covered.

Finally, sudden illness content is taught including shortness of breath, altered mental status chest pain, stroke, abdominal pain, diabetic emergencies, poisoning, animal bites and stings, seizures and complications of pregnancy.
